Excerpts from the August
2008 Unifax All are
welcome! August
3rd — Dana Lightsey: “Mixing Gods” Shopping for religious beliefs? It is common in our
society today to read, research, and adopt some religious beliefs from
cultures all over the world, mixing and matching these traditions and
beliefs to best suit us. This practice is a part of what informs us
as UUs. But what are we really creating? And what may we be
destroying? This service will examine the complex issues of mixing
gods. August
10th — “The Moral of the Story” Many of life's great lessons can be found in
children's literature. Come join us as members present these Reader’s
Theater versions of three stories by Helen Lester. A pan-generational
service. August
17th — Rev. Michael Corrigan: "Engaged Mysticism. Say
What?" Many of us think of
"mystics" as hermit-types who withdraw from the world to contemplate and
make space for their mystical visions and hoped-for revelations. What
would happen if we embraced the possibility of a mystic vision
drawing us forward to an even deeper and greater engagement with the
world? We will consider what the results of an intentional engaged
mysticism might be for the UU Church of Greeley, and for the wider
world. August
24th — Tom Woodrum: “Me-ism to We-ism: A
Humanist Journey” This
service will explore the Humanist movement and its impact on the Unitarian
Universalist Movement. With the help of “Reason and Reverence” by William
R. Murry, we will explore the need for our denomination to come to grips
with the need for a more spiritual perspective without totally abandoning
the value of Humanism. Meditation
and music with bagels afterward; an informal holiday service.
